Goose Joak Originals: Spring Training is Here

I love Spring Training, and I love Spring Training photos. This year I get to enjoy Spring Training cards as well. Special thanks go out to Paul and Tyler.

Drumroll...

Miguel Olivo, Kansas City Royals
by Goose Joak

Somebody got creative with the camera shot here. I love it!

Carlos Rosa, Kansas City Royals
by Goose Joak

There's a decent chance I'll see Carlos in Omaha this year.

Manny Acta, Washington Nationals
by Goose Joak

How's that for a manager card? Almost looks like a player. Just wait until I bust out my GM card. I have David Glass and Dave Dombrowski already completed. If somebody sends me a glamour shot of Theo Epstein I'll run them next.

Livan Hernandez, New York Mets
by Paul's Random Stuff

Heeeeeeeeeeee shaaaaalllllllll beeeee Liiiiiiiiihiiiiiivaaaaaaannnnn...

Touchdown Hernandez! Since 1901, only fifteen pitchers have thrown 180+ innings in a season with an ERA above 6.00. Livan was one of them in 2008.

That said, he was still carving up batters as recently as 2007. I remember one game in particular against the Rockies. He made Chris Iannetta look like a rookie leaguer. I also saw him pitch in person against St. Louis.

Tim Redding, New York Mets
by Paul's Random Stuff

Hey hey, it's Livan's main competition!

John Meloan, Cleveland Indians
by Tyler

This is why I love Spring Training. What an awesome shot.

Here's a pretty nifty article describing how much junk (stuff) teams have to haul down to Spring Training. The Phillies, for instance, bring 600 hats, 300 helmets, 2000 T-Shirts and 15,000 baseballs. It didn't say how many stretchy ropes they needed to bring though. Maybe the Indians have them covered.

Jailen Peguero, Arizona Diamondbacks
by Goose Joak

Ok, so it's technically not a Spring Training shot, but I found the guy while looking through the Spring Training photo wire. Does that count? I'd never heard of him until today.

Daniel Schlereth, Arizona Diamondbacks
by Goose Joak

You're going to see a lot of padded walls and chain link fences in Spring Training mound sessions.

At first I thought this guy was Sergio Mitre.

Clay Zavada, Arizona Diamondbacks
by Goose Joak

Another guy I've never heard of. Is he a prospect? Is he AAAA material? I have no idea, and I'm not even going to look him up. Maybe he'll turn out to be something decent.

Jon Garland, Arizona Diamondbacks
by Goose Joak

Strike a pose, Jon Garland. Pretty cool shot.

  1. Not to stalk my own site, but I sitemetered myself just now and, rather amazingly, I had been hit by somebody Googling "Clay Zavada Rookie Card." Rock on. The Clay Zavada Watch has now officially begun. Fan club of two and growing.

  2. I got a Theo pic for you. I put it on your spreadsheet. I guess you might as well put me down for the whole Red Sox team. I get enough e-mailed updates form various Red Sox sites that I will come across a slew of pictures.

  3. Great shot of Tim Redding. This post puts me in a good mood cause I'm heading to Fort Lauderdale tomorrow although I'm not going to catch any action unfortunately.

  4. That funny that you got a hit from someone looking for Clay's rookie card. I wonder what that person thought of it.

I love the Olivo and Meloan pics. Those are nice. I also like how Paul is already on the ball with the Livan card. He just signed a couple of days ago, didn't he.

  6. This set is the best idea I have seen in this industry in years. I have always enjoyed a lot of the custom card work that is done by other collectors, but this is taking it to the next level by building an entire 2009 MLB set. As a novice TTM'er, it is great to think that I will be able to get autographed cards of players that will not be included in the 2009 Topps and UD sets. Even better I won't have to wait for Series 2 products to get certain players on cards with their new teams. I just can't say enough good things about this project. It is the way cards should be.

  7. Steve, I really appreciate the kind words. I also saw the post on your blog. Thanks for getting the word out there. It means a lot especially given your experience in the industry. What else can I say? Thanks!!

  8. Dave, I am very happy to help with this project in any way I can. Something this good needs to be seen and enjoyed by as many people as possible. I have already posted topics with links about your set on SportsCollectors.net and SportsGraphing.com. The autograph folks will love your set. If there is any other way I can you with this project, please do not hestitate to let me know. Thank you for all of your work and effort.

that will give you a better idea of who clay zavada is. out of baseball in 2007 only to come back and put up some serious numbers in low A last year. He'll be in the show sometime this summer. If not on opening day..
