Tribute to 1993 Post - Carlos Gonzalez

Carlos Gonzalez, Colorado Rockies
Tribute to 1993 Post
by Goose Joak

Quite a player and just 24 years old.   Put up a Woah!-BA (or if you prefer, wOBA) of of .378 last year.  That puts him in good company: Evan Longoria, Ryan Zimmermann, Victor Martinez territory.  Ahead of Matt Kemp, even.  Also has back to back years of 10+ UZR/150s, which puts him in the top 10% of outfielders, if it were a full season.

The Rockies have a lot of good outfielders -- Hawpe, Gonzalez, Fowler, Seth Smith -- even Spilborghs was considered a good sleeper going into 2009.  Then there's Eric Young, a better fantasy player than real player. But still -- the Rockies are loaded with OF talent going into 2010.

  1. Nice card. I like that you went to the effort of removing the logos to make it fit in with the real Post set.

I won't pretend to understand the stats, though. OPS is about as complicated as I get. :)

  2. Thanks!

OPS isn't a bad stat either! wOBA attempts to assign more specific run values to each event that impacts OPS. From "the book" blog:

    (0.72xNIBB + 0.75xHBP + 0.90x1B + 0.92xRBOE + 1.24x2B + 1.56x3B + 1.95xHR) / PA

It still leaves out valuable things like baserunning (which underrates somebody like Carlos Gonzalez, or for that matter, somebody like Carlos Beltran). But it's another good thumbnail stat to use.

  3. You can't even tell this was a D-Backs picture and not a Rockies picture. Nice.

    moe.
